Gettin' the Garden Going...

This spring, I could hardly wait for gardening season to arrive. I started some plants in February and anxiously watched them start popping up... By the end of March, we were working outside preparing a new spot. Last year we had one spot that was about 5'x10' with 5 tomato, 2 pepper, and several potato plants. (It's the little patch you can barely see on the right of the cedar tree.) I wanted a bigger spot this year, so we had plenty to do... First we made a spot for potatoes (left of cedar) and also have some other plants stuck in there too now...

As April arrived, the indoor plants were growing pretty well... but I had trouble finding enough light for them (read "long stems on things, including romaine lettuce!"). They would spend mornings around the sink (when we could stand it) and moved to the front doors (west side) in the afternoons....

We were building up an area we could fence... and believe it or not... we turned all that dirt by hand... well, with a shovel... no motor!

Then we invaded the neighbor's barn for some good, fertile manure!!

And about the time I thought I couldn't shovel any more... a neighbor showed up with a load of topsoil he needed to dump. Hurray for ditch cleaning!! We'll take it right here...

We still had to move the topsoil from the dump site to the garden... but it was much easier digging than some of our past adventures had been. We eventually got it pretty level and ready to plant and then put some fence around it too....
April 21st, I started putting some plants in the ground. I thought from the charts that it was safe here after the 15th, but we waited a few more days... and even covered plants later because there was a chance of frost a few times.

In case you're wondering why we wanted a fence... It was mainly because of the neighborhood deer population... and the fact that they like to feed right behind where we put the new garden. I'm still wondering if they will try to eat some of the pole beans and peas off the fence, but so far they haven't.
